Two ways to learn

From your first roast to a refined profile

Roasting is where coffee flavour is really made. The same green bean can taste bright and fruity or rich and chocolatey depending entirely on how it's roasted — and learning to control that is a skill you can build in a day and sharpen over a lifetime. Our two coffee roasting courses give you a clear path, whether you're a curious home roaster, a café owner who wants to roast your own, or a barista ready to move behind the roaster.

Both courses run in person at our Roselands academy in Sydney on professional roasting equipment, in small groups so you get real hands-on time and personal feedback. Below you can compare them side by side and pick the right starting point.

Not sure which to pick?

How to choose the right roasting course

If you've never roasted coffee before, start with the Coffee Roasting Fundamentals course. It assumes no experience and takes you from green bean to finished cup in a single day — you'll leave understanding the roast phases, able to read a basic profile, and with coffee you roasted yourself.

If you already roast — at home or professionally — and you want more consistency, deeper flavour control, and help diagnosing what's going wrong, the Advanced Coffee Roasting course is the better fit. It builds on the fundamentals rather than repeating them.

Still unsure? The safest path is almost always to start with the Fundamentals. Even confident home roasters often find it fills gaps they didn't know they had — and it's the foundation the Advanced course assumes. If you'd like a recommendation for your situation, call us on (02) 9758 0760 and we'll point you to the right one.

Common questions

Coffee roasting courses, answered.

Do I need any experience to take a roasting course?

No. The Fundamentals course assumes no prior experience and starts from the very beginning — how green coffee roasts, what to listen and look for, and how to build a basic profile. The Advanced course is where prior roasting experience is expected.

What's the difference between the Fundamentals and Advanced courses?

The Fundamentals course teaches the core craft — roast phases, profiling basics, cupping and hands-on batches — in a single day. The Advanced course goes deeper into profiling precision, intentional flavour development, working across different origins, and diagnosing roast defects, tailored to your goals.

Where are the roasting courses held?

Both courses run in person at our academy at 97–99 Chapel St, Roselands NSW 2196, in Sydney's inner south-west — on the same professional roasting equipment we use every day.

Do I get to roast coffee myself, or just watch?

You roast. These are hands-on courses run in small groups so everyone gets real time on the equipment — you'll roast your own batches, taste the results, and take coffee home.

Can I do a roasting course as a gift or for my café team?

Yes. The Fundamentals course makes a memorable gift for coffee lovers, and it's a great shared experience for café teams who want to bring roasting knowledge in-house. Call (02) 9758 0760 to arrange group or gift bookings.

Which course should I start with?

If you've never roasted, start with the Fundamentals — it's the foundation the Advanced course builds on. If you already roast and want more depth and consistency, go straight to Advanced. Unsure? Start with Fundamentals, or call us for a recommendation.
