Group Barista Class vs 1-on-1 Training: Which Should You Choose?

Short answer

Choose the group class ($99) if you're a beginner or hobbyist who wants hands-on café skills at the best possible price and doesn't mind sharing the machine with a few others on a set date.

Choose 1-on-1 training ($249) if you want the fastest route to job-ready, a date and focus that suit you, and undivided trainer attention — ideal if you're chasing café work or have specific gaps to fix.

Both of our practical barista courses run for 3.5 hours on real commercial espresso equipment at our Roselands academy, and both cover the same core foundations — espresso extraction, milk texturing, and machine basics. The difference isn't the syllabus. It's the format: how much personal attention you get, how much you pay, and how much control you have over timing. Here's how to pick.

The group class: best value for beginners

The Barista Training Group Class is the most accessible way into real café skills in Sydney. At $99 for a 3.5-hour session, you learn espresso extraction, milk steaming and machine basics on commercial equipment, alongside a small group. You still make the drinks yourself — this isn't a demo you watch — you just share the trainer's time with a few other people.

It's the right pick if you're:

  • New to coffee and want a solid, affordable foundation
  • A home enthusiast wanting to make better coffee for yourself
  • Testing whether barista work is for you before committing further
  • Happy to attend on one of our scheduled class dates

1-on-1 training: fastest route to job-ready

The Barista Training 1-on-1 is a private 3.5-hour session, booked on a date that suits you, with the trainer focused entirely on your hands and your questions. Because nothing is shared, you cover more ground and every correction is aimed at your technique — which is why it's the fastest way to become café-ready.

It's the right pick if you're:

  • Job-hunting and want to walk into a trial shift confident
  • Working around a busy schedule and need a specific date
  • Looking to fix particular weak spots — pour consistency, dialling in, milk texture
  • Someone who learns best without an audience

It's also available as a 2-on-1 session, which works well for couples, friends or a café sending two staff together.

What both classes have in common

Whichever you choose, you'll train on the same professional espresso machines and grinders found in working cafés, guided by trainers with real industry experience, and you'll leave with a certificate of completion. Neither of these two options is a nationally recognised qualification — if you need that, look at the Prepare & Serve Espresso Coffee unit instead, which combines online theory with practical assessment and issues a Statement of Attainment.

Still not sure?

A simple rule of thumb: if the decision is mostly about budget, take the group class — it's excellent value and you'll still get real hands-on practice. If the decision is about speed, timing or a specific goal, the 1-on-1 pays for itself in how quickly you improve. And if you already know you want a recognised credential for your career, start with the accredited pathway rather than either of these.

Frequently asked questions

Is the group class or 1-on-1 better for a complete beginner?

Both suit beginners. The group class is the better-value starting point, while 1-on-1 gets a beginner job-ready faster because all the attention is on you.

How long is each barista class?

Both run for 3.5 hours of hands-on training on commercial equipment at our Roselands academy.

Do these classes give me a nationally recognised qualification?

No — the group class and 1-on-1 are practical skills courses with a certificate of completion. For a nationally recognised credential, choose the Prepare & Serve Espresso Coffee unit.

Can I choose the date for my session?

The 1-on-1 session is booked on a date of your choice. The group class runs on set class dates — contact us on (02) 9758 0760 for the next available date.

Do I need a certificate to work as a barista in Sydney?

There's no mandatory licence to make coffee in NSW, but hands-on training gives you a real edge when applying for café work because you can start confidently on commercial equipment from day one.

Ready to pull your first shot?

Train hands-on at our Roselands academy on the same commercial machines used in working cafés across Sydney.
